How We Made It Over

In this workshop, “How we made it over”: African-American Queer Women’s Spirituality and Resistance to Christian-based Homophobia, Shannon J. Miller, Ph.D. and Monica Carol Evans, MPA covered several areas pertaining to Christianity/spirituality and homophobia in the African-American community, particularly women.

The presenters provided a historical and contemporary political understanding of Christian-based homophobia; gave information and data from interviews with African-American queer women to discuss the different resistance strategies to Christian-based homophobia within the context of families and communities; and identified ways participants can connect their sexual orientation and gender identity with their spiritual selves. The discussion also included conversation about Bible interpretation and the filters through which to look at the Bible.

Finally, a member of The Juicebox Jubilee blessed us with a beautiful, uplifting song.
